Threats of Air Pollution

20% of deaths in India are due to Air Pollution.

Air pollution collectively reduced life expectancy by 20 months on average worldwide.

Air pollution contributes to development of type 2 diabetes. Exposure to PM2.5 was the third leading risk factor for type 2 diabetes deaths.

Impact on Children

Children are most vulnerable, as they breathe at a higher rate and breathe more air per pound of body weight than adults.

Air pollution exposure can impair lung development in children, leading to lifelong breathing problems and disability. Pollution harms children before they are even born.

88% children are exposed to Indoor Air Pollution, affecting their cognitive and neurodevelopment abilities.

Impact on Women

The effects of exposure to household air pollution are horrendous.

For women in low and middle income countries, it is the single leading environmental health risk and the main cause of noncommunicable diseases like strokes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, lung cancer and heart disease.

Air pollution can also affect the reproductive system and cause abnormal pregnancies. As pregnant women who are exposed to polluted air are more likely to give birth to premature, small, low birth-weight children.

Impact on Senior Citizens

Senior Citizens suffer from chronic health illness like Diabetes Type 2 and Day Time Drowsiness mostly triggered by respiratory issues from breathing polluted air.

Due to comorbidity, exposure to Air pollutants may even be fatal. They face problems with vision, the rising pollution level only aggravates the issue.

The functioning of their heart gradually declines. Hence, exercising during pollution alert days can risk the chance of cardiac attack.

Air Pollution due to Road Traffic

Traffic-related air pollution causes development and worsening of asthma symptoms in children.

It has also been linked to many other negative health effects, including lung cancer, heart disease, increased risk of death from heart conditions.

Air Pollution Is Not Just An Environmental Concern Any More, But An Urgent Public Health And Hygiene Crisis Throughout The Year.

As per World Health Organization(WHO)

air pollution – both ambient (outdoor) and household (indoor) – is the biggest environmental risk to health, responsible for about one in every nine deaths annually.

Carbon Dioxide is the most significant long-lived greenhouse gas in Earth’s atmosphere. Exposure to high CO2 levels can cause headaches, vertigo, seizures, and tinnitus.

Hydrogen Sulfide is a colorless gas with a foul odor. Repeated exposure to high levels of H2S may cause convulsions, coma, brain and heart damage.

Carbon Monoxide is a highly poisonous gas. Exposure to CO can cause headache, dizziness, chest pain, and blurred vision. At high levels it is life-threatening.

Sulfur Dioxide is a colorless gas with a strong odor. Exposure to SO2 can cause difficulty in breathing, burning of the nose, throat, and lungs.

Nitrogen Dioxide is reddish-brown gas with a pungent odor. Long-term exposure can cause asthma and respiratory infections.

Particulate matter is the term for tiny particles found in the air as a result of a chemical reaction between pollutants. Exposure to PM can cause suffocation, aggravated asthma, heart attacks, premature death in people with heart or lung disease.

Volatile Organic Compounds can be found in paints and thinners, air fresheners, repellents. Exposure to VOCs may cause irritation of eyes, nose and throat, fatigue, dizziness, cancer.

LPG is colorless and extremely flammable gas.

Ozone is a gas that occurs both in the earth’s upper atmosphere and at earth’s ground level. Breathing ozone can cause chest pain, congestion, asthma attacks.

Smoke is commonly a by-product of fire. Smoke inhalation is the primary cause of death in victims of indoor fires.

Temperature is one of the basic parameters characterizing comfort of living beings. Wide variations in temperature have consequences on health.

Humans are sensitive to humid air because human body uses evaporative cooling as the primary mechanism to regulate temperature. For some people higher humidity can result in breathing problems, numbness, and faintness.

Vayuvedh® Case Study

Overview

  • To make Chemical Factories, Petroleum Industries, Municipal Corporations, Government and common Citizens aware of the presence of Harmful Gases around them which lead to increase in several diseases and sometimes result in deaths.

Problem

  • In the past 3 decades, there have been at least 10 incidents of harmful gas leakages in India. In such tragedies, thousands of people have lost their lives and many of them have got severely injured.
  • With 27,027 deaths, every fifth fire-related death in the world in 2017 took place in India. Around 9 million fire incidents and 1.2 lakh deaths were recorded across the globe that year.
  • Indian Parliament's panel on petroleum and natural gas has registered its concern on deaths due to LPG gas leakage and blasts due to leakage. In 2017-18, LPG blasts claimed at least 260 lives. In the first six months of the year 2018-19, a little over 100 deaths were reported.
  • There is lack of Fire Safety Procedures which should include detection of fire in its very early stage. By the time the authorities get to know about the Fire, the fire usually covers a big area which leads to damage of lives and valuable assets.
  • In most of the metropolitan cities, the Air Quality Index is getting higher day by day. Everyday the Air is getting polluted by the pollutants emitted by thousands of Vehicles and Industrial Areas which leads to critical health issues to people.

Offered Solution

Offered Solution

  • Viliso Technology is a technology-driven company in the field of IoT. Viliso has provided a solution to detect presence of harmful gases with their levels on a continuous basis. The solution involves an electronic device known as Vayuvedh® and a Mobile & Web application. The device requires internet connection and monitors the presence of harmful gases as well as other elements like Particulate Matters and Volatile Organic Compounds in the air.
It transmits the data to mobile & web app through cloud server. The device is fitted in the premises where the monitoring of Air Quality is required. The device then sends the data to mobile app & web app which are used by the monitoring authority. Mobile app and web app both have facility to display the data of gases like Carbon Monoxide, Sulphur Dioxide, Carbon Dioxide, Nitrogen Dioxide, Hydrogen Sulphide, Ozone and other elements like Temperature, Humidity, LPG/LNG, Smoke and TVOC.
The app also allows the users to view historical data in Hourly, Daily, Weekly and Monthly Graphical display format. Instant alerts are generated on mobile app, if any of the parameters cross the given threshold values. In this case, timely alerts are sent to respective authorities so the appropriate action and preventive measures can be taken. Alert based system can help to save lives of people and valuable assets which get damaged due to above mentioned problems.
