Gandhvedh® Case Study

Overview

  • To enable Government authorities, Community Based Organisations, Caretakers and Owners to know the sanitary conditions of toilets; empower them with latest technologies to identify toilets with unpleasant odour and take appropriate action.

Problem

  • The Government of India launched the Swachh Bharat Mission with the intent that India should become Open defecation free (ODF). However even after five years of its launch and execution, we find India has still not become ODF. Though we have established four walls of the toilet, yet people tend to go in open and this is a severe threat to public health and hygiene.
  • In Mumbai, the slum population is 41%, i.e. over 9 million people stay in slums. The toilets are taken care by both pay and use (public toilets) and Community Based Organisations (CBO). Community-based Organisation is a community partnership model, where few members of the community take the ownership to maintain the toilets. However these toilets still have the issue of sanitation and odour.
  • A good or bad smell is one of first things that people notice when entering toilets. Foul smell emanating from toilets is a major deterrent to end-users. The problem is identifying and tracking malodour from these toilets on a continual basis.

Offered Solution

  • Viliso Technology is a technology-driven company in the field of IoT. Viliso has provided them a solution to measure odour intensity in toilets on a continuous basis. The solution involves an electronic device known as Gandhvedh® and Mobile & Web application. The device requires internet connection and monitors the odour level and transmits the data to mobile & web app through cloud server. The device is fitted in the toilet where the odour monitoring is required. The device then sends the odour data to mobile app & web app which are used by the caretaker or monitoring authority responsible for sanitation of the toilet. Mobile app and web app both have facility to display the data of Odour, Temperature, Humidity and TVOC. The app also allows the users to view historical data in Hourly, Daily, Weekly and Monthly Graphical display format. Instant alerts are generated on mobile app, if any of the parameters cross the given threshold values. In this case timely alerts to both CBO and Caretakers has prompted appropriate action by the caretaker to keep the toilets clean and odour free. Alert based system helped them focus on the specific issue in time and reduced their dependence on direct feedback from users. The mobile app / web app user has option to set the alert level values.

Impact

  • The technology-driven approach has removed bias or subjectivity in identifying toilets with unpleasant smell. The odour information is now available to caretakers, CBO Incharge, it’s federation, government authorities. This has brought transparency and helped apex person in federation to know status of all the CBO toilets. Gandhvedh® application and timely alert notifications have allowed caretakers to keep toilets clean.
